If you plan on being an engineer, you should probably already be a miner. Miners collect ore and smelt ore into bars to create the majority of engineering items. Engineer recipes often include jewels, which are found in a variety of places. Typically, most engineers buy or are given rare jewels from other players. The auction house is a good place to buy gems if you can't mine them yourself. Some engineer recipes require leather, which you will need to buy from a skinner or the auction house. You will need to find a lot of other odd ingredients for your recipes that might need to be purchased from other players. Some items can actually be fished up with the fishing skill or found from monster drops or treasure chests.

Artisan Trainers
For the Alliance, Springspindle Fizzlegear found in Ironforge, Tinkertown. For the Horde, Roxxik is located in Orgrimmar.

Gnomish and Goblin Engineering
After you think you have mastered Engineering, you are offered a chance to specialize in either Gnomish or Goblin Engineering. You must first reach 200 skill and level 35. Alliance players can then speak to Lilliam Sparkspindle in Stormwind City. Horde players can talk to Tinkerwiz in Ratchet. Then you will be offered some quests to open new recipes for that school of engineering. Oglethorpe Obnoticus is the master Gnomish trainer and is found in Booty Bay. Buzzek Bracketswing is the master Goblin Engineer in Tanaris, Gadgetzan. Once you've selected your side, you cannot switch to the other. You should choose based on what recipes are available. There are some very cool and unique recipes for each side. You have to pick which ones you like the best. It can be a hard decision, they're both good, good luck!

Master Engineer (skill 300-375)
To receive master training you need to head to Outland.

• Alliance players can learn from Lebowski at Honor Hold, Hellfire Peninsula or K. Lee Smallfry in Telredor, Zangarmarsh
• Horde players can learn from Mack Diver at Zabra'jin, Zangarmarsh or Zebig in Thrallmar, Hellfire Peninsula.
• Both sides can train from Xyrol (Area 52, Netherstorm).

Leveling Up Engineering (skill 300 to 375)
There are many ways to raise your skill to 375. Here's a possible upgrade path recommended by Highlander, a player on EU-Terenas: Handful of Fel Iron Bolts, Fel Iron Shells, Fel Iron Bomb, White Smoke Flare, Felsteel Stabilizer, Ultra-Spectropic Detection Goggles, Khorium Scope.

Grand Master Engineer (skill 375-450)
To find a trainer you will need to visit Northrend.

• Alliance players go to Tisha Longbridge in Valgarde, Howling Fjord.
• Horde players go to Jamesina Watterly in Vengeance Landing, Howling Fjord.
• Both sides can visit Justin Oshenko in Dalara at the Magus Commerce Exchange.

Burning Crusade Items
There are some neat new items in The Burning Crusade:

• Several powerful epic helms
• New scopes to permanently enhance ranged weapons
• For leather wearers, the new Rocket Boots Xtreme
• A Nigh-Invulnerability Belt protects you with a shield of force - when it works
• A Dimensional Ripper that will teleport you to Area 52, or an Ultrasafe Transporter for Toshley's Station
• Smoke Flares, which send up a plume of smoke for five minutes - handy for marking areas in a raid encounter!
• Toolboxes to store your engineering items
• New bombs of all shapes and sizes
• Zapthrottle Mote Extractor, available via a quest reward, can be used to extract Motes of Mana, Life, and Shadow from various nodes in the world.

Repair Robot (aka Repair Bot)
An engineering recipe is available in Blackrock Depths for a repair robot. Next to Golem Lord Argelmach, there is a scroll that can teach you the schematic. You must have 300 engineering. This robot acts as a repair vendor for 10 minutes and will repair and purchase items for normal cost. This will allow dungeon groups and raids to get items repaired and sold without returning to town. These are very useful in raids. "Does someone have a repair bot?"

• Engineering recipes can be placed in engineering bags, as can engineer made fireworks.
• Engineering is good for PvP and for a few items useful in raids.
• Gnomes have a racial ability of +15 to Engineering. This allows them to reach Artisan Engineering prior to level 35. Some defenders can be summoned by the Gnome that are higher level thanks to this bonus to engineering.
• You can create area of effect and direct damage explosives that you can use during combat. You can also give or sell these to other players.
• Scopes do not require the Engineering skill to equip. You can sell scopes to other players or in the auction house. Whenever someone upgrades their gun they should also want a new scope.
• The level of the Mechanical Dragonlings, Battlechicken, and Bombs dropped by the Goblin Bomb Dropper scale with your engineering skill, so they will be always useful against enemies.
• You can find engineering devices as drops on higher level dungeons and in raids.
• Bombs cause a disorient effect when they go off.
• Seaforium opens locked chests as well as locked doors.
• The Consortium Vendor Karaaz sells the engineering recipe for an Elemental Seaforium Charge if you are revered with them.
• Target Dummies generate an initial taunt pulse so creatures will attack them for the first 5 seconds after they are dropped.
• Both types of the engineer-made Jumper Cables share a cooldown.
• Plans for an arrow making device can be found from Sunfury Archers.
• Cogspinner Gearcutter in Ironforge and Sovik in Orgrimmar now sell the schematic for the Steam Tonk Controller in a limited supply.
• Plans for a Field Repair Bot are rumored to belong to a select few Gan'arg Analyzers in Blade's Edge Mountains.
• The plans for adamantite shells create an Adamantite Shell Machine. The machine creates 200 high quality bullets at a time, with 5 charges per item.
• A new recipe for Rocket Boots Xtreme Lite, a cloth version of the Rocket Boots Xtreme, drops from Mechano-Lord Capacitus.
• Rocket Boots Xtreme and Rocket Boots Xtreme Lite will cause players to drop a PvP flag if used while carrying one. (Warsong Gulch, Eye of the Storm, and Zangarmarsh)
• Gagsprocket in Ratchet sells the plans for the Minor Recombobulator.
• The stun caused by engineering Bombs and Grenades is considered an Incapacitate effect and uses the appropriate Incapacitate diminishing returns. Bomb and Grenades can inflict damage to targets immune to Stun and Incapacitate effects.
