layers can send and receive in-game mail through World of Warcraft's postal system. Every inn has a mailbox that players can right click on in order to access mailbox functionality.

Types of Mail

There are several types of mail:

Normal Mail: This is text only mail written on stationery.

Package: Players will receive a package when an item is sent to them. A package can also include a text message and money.

C.O.D: Players will receive a C.O.D. mail when an item has been sent to them that they still need to pay for. C.O.D. mail will need to be accepted and paid for, rejected, or postponed until its expiration date.

Normal Mail will arrive at its destination immediately while Packages, mails containing gold, and C.O.D items will take one hour to arrive.

Be sure to check your mailbox regularly as it does expire after a certain period of time:

Normal Mail: expires in 30 days, deleted when expired.

Package: expires in 30 days, returned to sender when expired.

C.O.D.: expires in 3 days, returned to sender when expired.

Mail can be sent to players by NPCs. Players on ignore lists will not be able to send mail to those ignoring them.

Additional Information:

Mailboxes can be found near Inns. Mailboxes have different appearances based upon race and location.

It costs 30 copper to send mail. If you don't wish to pay the postage you can set the mail as C.O.D. for 30 copper. The person receiving the mail must then pay the required fee to receive the mail. This might be useful if you're mailing an item to another person that you're giving away for free. However, some people might be offended if you send them a mail but require them to pay the postage. It can be seen as being cheap. As you become higher level, the postage fee becomes very cheap compared to the amount of money you have.

You cannot send mail to yourself. This would be considered an exploit, since it would allow players to unfairly have additional storage space.

You can send mail to your other characters, which can then be used to exchange items or money.

You cannot mail players of the opposing faction such as Horde mailing Alliance players.

Mail that has been read is now greyed-out.

When all attachments from a mail have been removed (including text), the mail is automatically deleted.

There is a confirmation box for accepting C.O.D mail.

There is a confirmation box for deleting mail that has an item or money attached, when the delete option is available.

If the subject line is not filled in when you put an item in a piece of mail, it will automatically be filled in with the item being sent.

You can now send up to 12 items in a single mail message.

When you have an outgoing mail open, you can right-click on items to attach them to that outgoing mail.

When you have unopened mail, you can mouse over the recent mail icon and get the name of the people who most recently sent you the mail.

You can hold Shift and click on mail in your inbox to automatically loot any items and gold without opening the mail. This default behavior can be changed via Auto Loot Mail in the Interface Options (Controls).

Mailing Tips

Check your mailbox when you come back to town. You never know what might be in there!

Make sure you send your mail to the correct person. Their name must be spelled correctly or the mail may go to the wrong person, just like real email!

Mail is great for trade skill craftsmen. Have your friends or guildmates mail you ingredients and recipes. You can also sell items you have created to other players by C.O.D. You can advertise an item and offer to mail it to the buyer. Another mail option is for someone to send you a reminder that they want you to create a certain item for them.

Before paying for a C.O.D. item make sure it is set at the correct price. You do not want to overpay for an item.

If you receive an item/mail you do not want, click on the return button to return it to the sender. Be sure not to click this button by mistake.

Remind people that items will take one hour to arrive. Players unfamiliar with the mail system might expect it to be delivered instantly. You can send mail instantly to your own characters but mail to other accounts containing items or money will take an hour.

Mailing Ideas:

You can mail gifts to other players.

If someone does something cool for you, send them a mail thanking them, and you can even send them some sort of item as a reward! Perhaps you're a cook and can mail them some treat you've created.

You can buy flowers and mail them.
